Vienna Smart Growth

Establishing a vision

Planning for a sustainable future in Vienna began in 2002. The town partnered with The Conservation Fund, a non-profit group, to create a community vision plan. Given Vienna’s Census 2000 population of 280 people, it was impressive when 110 individuals turned out for the first visioning meeting in October 2002.

Additional input was gathered through community interviews with 29 residents and an opinion survey conducted by Salisbury University.

Vienna established several guiding principles:

  • Accommodate future growth and appropriate economic development.
  • Maintain the small town character and setting of Vienna.
  • Enhance quality of life by providing community amenities.
  • Protect the significant cultural and natural resources within Vienna as well as the significant scenic vistas and farms and forests surrounding the town.

The attached document shows the plan submitted to and approved by the Maryland Department of Planning.
